What to Pack in Your Maternity Hospital Bag?

The final weeks of pregnancy bring a mix of anticipation, excitement, and the growing feeling that the big day is drawing near. As you prepare to meet your baby, packing your hospital bag in advance can help minimise unnecessary stress and avoid last-minute rushing. Ideally, have everything ready by 34–36 weeks of pregnancy, so all the essentials are organised and within easy reach when you need them.

If you are preparing for childbirth for the first time, this checklist will help you gather everything you and your baby may need, step by step.

1. Newborn clothing

For the first few days, choose soft, breathable fabrics that feel gentle against your baby’s delicate skin. Practical, easy-to-use pieces are especially helpful while you are still becoming familiar with caring for your newborn.

  • 3–4 outfits – bodysuits or other comfortable garments with easy-to-use fastenings;
  • 2–3 hats – lightweight, soft hats designed for newborns;
  • 2–3 pairs of socks – preferably with soft, gentle elastic that will not feel too tight;
  • Mittens – useful if your baby has long nails, helping to prevent accidental scratches on the face;
  • Blanket – choose a lightweight or warmer option depending on the season and the temperature in the hospital.

2. Comfort and personal care for mom

Comfortable clothing and personal care essentials can make your hospital stay much more convenient. Having these items packed in advance allows you to focus on your recovery and your newborn rather than looking for essentials at the last minute.

  • 2 maternity or nursing nightgowns – choose styles with a front opening or easy breastfeeding access;
  • Robe and slippers – a lightweight robe and comfortable slippers with non-slip soles are practical for moving around the hospital;
  • 2 nursing bras – opt for soft, supportive styles that provide comfort throughout the day;
  • Postpartum underwear and maternity pads – check with your maternity hospital in advance to find out which products and quantities they recommend;
  • Breast pads – particularly useful once breastfeeding begins;
  • Personal hygiene essentials – toothbrush and toothpaste, shampoo, shower gel, hairbrush, moisturiser, and lip balm.

3. Hygiene supplies for the newborn

Keeping your baby’s essentials in a separate bag or organiser can make everything easier to find when you need it.

  • Newborn diapers – sizes 0–1 are commonly used, although the most suitable size depends on your baby’s estimated birth weight;
  • Wipes – choose fragrance-free, alcohol-free wipes specifically formulated for newborns;
  • Diaper rash cream – opt for a gentle formula suitable for delicate newborn skin;
  • Soft towel – a hooded towel can be especially convenient for keeping your baby warm and comfortable after a bath.

4. Documents and essentials

Keep important documents and everyday essentials in an easily accessible compartment of your hospital bag so they are always close at hand.

  • ID card or passport;
  • Medical records, test results, and pregnancy-related documents;
  • Phone and charger – a longer charging cable can be particularly useful if the nearest power outlet is some distance from your bed.

Packing your hospital bag ahead of time can make the final weeks of pregnancy feel calmer and more organised. Once everything is ready, you can spend those precious final days focusing on yourself, your wellbeing, and the little one you are about to meet.
