How to Teach Kids to Share Toys?

Teaching children the importance of sharing toys is akin to sowing the seeds of friendship and kindness, fostering empathy, teamwork, and healthy relationships. By taking certain steps with care, you can instill in your child the ability to share their toys with others.

The process of developing sharing skills typically begins around age 3 and progresses throughout childhood. Even older children may struggle with sharing, particularly when it involves something they hold dear.

set a good example

Leading by example is key. Children learn best by observing their parents' generosity and willingness to share, which in turn influences their own behavior with friends and family.

Small steps

It will take a lot of effort before division skills become a habit for your child. So start with small items. Ask to share colored pencils or toy cubes, for example, so your child can learn the process easily.

VERBAL ENCOURAGEMENT

When children share, it is important to encourage them. Say something kind that will warm their hearts, such as: "I am so pleased that you are sharing your play." The right words and encouragement in a conversation about the importance of sharing have a powerful impact on understanding this concept.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Sometimes sharing can cause problems. Teach children to talk about problems and find solutions. Ask questions like "How can we share this doll?" or "What do we need to do to make everyone happy?" Working together helps children learn to solve problems together.

KINDNESS

Encourage kindness by helping others. Give your child the opportunity to give his toys to another child that he is no longer playing with. This teaches your child the importance of sharing and how their actions can make someone else happier.

Learning to share takes time. Be patient and encourage your toddler and his friends. Sharing toys is a powerful tool to help children be closer to each other and share joy.
