9 Summer Safety Tips for Traveling with Your Child
High temperatures inside a car can pose a serious threat to a child’s health — especially for those still using a car seat.
In this blog, you'll find 9 simple yet essential tips to help you travel safely with your child while keeping the whole family comfortable, even on the hottest days.
Never leave your child alone in the car
The temperature inside a parked vehicle can reach dangerous levels within minutes — even if the car is in the shade or the window is slightly open. A child should never, under any circumstances, be left alone in a car, not even for a moment. This rule is non-negotiable and should be strictly followed by all parents.
Check the car seat before placing your child in it
Plastic and metal parts of the seat can heat up quickly after the car has been parked. Before securing your child in the seat, always check the harness, buckles, backrest, and headrest to make sure they’re not too hot to the touch. If they are, allow them to cool down first.
Shield the car seat from direct sunlight
If you’re leaving your vehicle parked for an extended period, cover the child seat with a cloth or specially designed vehicle seat cover. This will help prevent surfaces from overheating and reduce the risk of burns or discomfort for your child.
Use certified sunshades
Some plush or decorative window shades contain plastic or metal parts that can become hazardous in the event of sudden braking or a collision. Only use certified, crash-tested sunshades designed with child safety in mind. When it comes to protecting your little one, it’s always best to choose safety over aesthetics.
Dress your child in light, breathable clothing
Air circulation in a car seat is limited, which can cause your child to overheat quickly. Dress them in lightweight cotton or breathable fabrics. In summer, hats and socks are often unnecessary — skipping them can make the ride more comfortable and help your child stay cool longer.
Don’t add padding or extra layers to the car seat
Avoid placing towels, blankets, pillows, or any additional items in or around the seat. These can alter the seat’s structure and reduce its protective function. Use the baby car seat exactly as intended by the manufacturer.
Cool the car down before you start driving
Before buckling your child in, run the air conditioning or open the windows for 2–3 minutes to lower the temperature inside the cabin. Built-up heat doesn’t dissipate instantly, and placing a child into a hot car can be dangerous.
Take regular breaks on long trips
When traveling long distances, plan to stop every 90 minutes or so. Take your baby out of the child seat, let the car seat air out, and allow your little one to stretch and get some fresh air. This helps regulate body temperature and keeps them more comfortable throughout the journey.
Car seats are essential - even in summer
As temperatures rise, some parents may question whether a car seat is still necessary. But the answer is simple: safety doesn’t depend on the season. What matters most is choosing the right seat for your child’s age and height — and making sure it’s properly installed.
